Yesterday we took a trip to visit Sandham Memorial Chapel, a National Trust property just south of Newbury. It is one of their smaller sites and contains a chapel decorated with paintings by Sir Stanley Spencer.

Spencer was commissioned to work on it in the decade after the Great War and created a fascinating and poignant merging of scenes reflecting his experiences as a hospital orderly at an institution in Bristol and on the rather forgotten Salonika front, along with a hope in redemption and resurrection. The east panel, of which this shows part, is a huge scene showing soldiers rising from their graves.

I found it a moving visit and was glad to spend a few minutes pondering it with pencil in hand.
