Down a Tone

I normally play Silent Night in G but, since I had the benefit of a flautist joining us for the Christmas Eve Communion tonight, I decided to stick to the key of B flat, which we had dots for. I was on guitar and B flat isn’t a hard key, given the relatively simple harmonic structure of the song, but other keys fit the instrument better.

Fortunately, one of them is C and, as I was playing my Variax guitar, it was a small matter to tweak the tuning dial. That meant I could play chords fitting the key of C and come out sounding in B flat. Combined with the fact I had the chords on OnSong, it was trivial to add a ‘virtual capo’ so I could see the chords I needed to play without any mental calculation.

Just as well, since I was also singing!
