Last night we went to Oxford’s North Wall Arts Centre to see Creation Theatre’s production of Snow White. The story of Snow White and the seven dwarves is one of the staples of Christmas panto but this was a different take, digging back more to the original tales told by the brothers Grimm in the early 19th century.

As well as Snow White, the production wove in a wealth of other tales from the same source, such as Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin and Red Cape (now more commonly known as Little Red Riding Hood). Weaving is the apposite verb, as stories were told by characters in stories, the cast switching from role to role with simple tricks of costume and a wide variety of accents and mannerisms.

The show was staged in the round. The small raised stage, replete with a number of trap doors to allow a few bits of stagecraft, was surrounded by the audience, seated in small clusters round tables. Altogether Grimm but also delightful, Snow White runs until 7 January.
