Happy Christmas 2016

Merry Christmas 2016

Merry Christmas one and all. For this year’s card design, I drew on the Out of India course I did back in the summer. It would be fair to say that I’ve come quite a long way out of the core focus of that course but it draws on several of the techniques I picked up there.

The background is woven from two pieces of paper, each of which had a different graduated water colour wash in vivid colours. To bring that together, I cut a stamp from an artificial cork, which I’ve printed with white paint and also blue ink. A few further details have also been added in felt tip. That mixture of colour, abstraction and varying levels of detail was one of the hallmarks of a lot of the Indian pieces we used for inspiration.

I’ve drawn it together with some mountainous foreground shapes. Is that looming darkness (a popular view of the last year) or just another place where light and hope will overcome. I think I’d lean towards the latter – as the prologue of John’s gospel reminds us, the Light of the World shines in the darkness and will not be overcome.

Merry Christmas and a hope-filled New Year.
