Today’s prize for best street name goes to Bad Homburg Way in Exeter.
I suspect it has been named after the German town (twinned with Exeter) but it makes me think of hats! Allegedly the homburg hat was thus named after Edward VII bought one back from visiting the town so perhaps it all links together. It’s a shame we didn’t stick with the town’s full name because of the gleeful possibilities from English meanings associated with ‘bad’; in German it simply means ‘bath’ because the Homburg in question is a spa town like, erm, Bath.
Gosh – what an education one can glean from a chance observation!
