I watched a couple of films over the weekend on Netflix. Robocop (2014) was a better film than I recall the original (1987) to have been, with less gratuitous violence (bloodless rather than bloodspattered action) and better visual effects but too many loose ends. Were they trying for a reboot of the sequels too?

On the other hand, Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014) was brilliant. Hector, played by Simon Pegg, is a psychiatrist who is feeling increasing unhappy in himself and what he can do for his patients so he decides to go on a journey to research what makes people happy and, in his travels, has a range of experiences, not all of which would are entirely happy ones.

The film could be accused of a degree of cheesiness and I don’t think it gives too much away to say that he who seeks will find (eventually) but I felt it managed to get a good balance between being entertaining and being worthwhile and I’d gladly watch it again, not least because I suspect that, like a lot of Pegg’s other films, there are plenty of hidden layers to be peeled back on further viewing.
