At the Red Lion jazz jam last month I noticed a change; almost everyone was using some kind of tablet to provide their music instead of pads of printed sheets or physical copies of the Real Book and other fake books. It is certainly a more portable solution and you can easily carry round countless songs you will probably never play while still being able to find the ones that are called.
Some of the software (I think iReal Pro is the biggest player in the current herd) also allows transposing on the fly, which is a real boon when someone wants a different key to the standard. It will be interesting to see if the trend continues but, while tablet computers continue to be readily available and relatively inexpensive, I suspect it will.
