If you aren’t too squeamish, then the recent Pain, Pus and Poison series on BBC4 receives my commendation as worth a watch. Michael Mosley does various self-experimentation but, although it sometimes looks shocking (like poking a needle through his hand to demonstrate the effectiveness of anaesthetics), I am sure it is very carefully monitored compared to the pioneering work which led to many of the helps we take for granted today but which would have appeared magical in past centuries.

Probably not one to watch over dinner through unless you are very unsqueamish!
