Tonight we watched Coraline, a stop-motion animation based on a story by Neil Gaiman. It is a fascinating piece of work, clearly drawing on well-established story telling tropes such as things coming in groups of threes and washed in a dreamish surrealism. Plot, characters and visuals all have fascinating and sometimes unexpected twists and turns but I was particularly struck by the music, including some gorgeous fretless bass work from Bernard Paganotti.
He isn’t a bassist I have been aware of before but appears to have a long history; my follow-up homework from watching the film will be to see if I can track down some more of his playing to listen to.
