Since we got Jane an upgraded pair of binoculars for Christmas (slightly greater magnification, much greater light gathering powers) I have realised that as well as being essential kit for birdwatching, they are also very handy for surveying the garden. When the weather is wet and cold (as it has turned this weekend), you can survey what is outside and see fine details like green tips breaking through the soil and buds forming. Hurrah for optics!
