I have managed to do a batch of baking before heading off to work this morning: potato scones. These combine flour, butter, baking powder, sugar and milk with mashed potato. It is the first time I have made them and my first impression is that they taste a lot like doughnuts.
I think it is the combination of a soft, slightly chewy dough (from the starch in the potatoes?) combined with the sugary sweetness. However, while these are certainly not in the health food category, at least they are not a sweet dough deep fried in oil and coated with sugar, so probably less deleterious than the food they remind me of.
It will be interesting to see what they taste like when they are not still steaming hot from the oven and also to try the savoury variant at some point not too far into the future.
