What was my favourite thing about this year’s trip to Greenbelt (apart from the two givens of playing a gig at the Performance CafĂ© and catching up with friends, both expected and unexpected)? I think it was probably the few minutes we spent gazing in wonder at Willie Williams’ Lumia Domestica exhibit. In a darkened room, the artist had set up boxes containing a dual layered turntable. The bottom layer was patterned with strips of translucent colour while the top was clear. Lights shone from underneath through rotating glass objects on the top (ordinary or even kitsch things like tumblers and patterned fruit bowls) creating wonderful, coruscating patterns on the walls reminiscent of the Aurora Borealis. Glorious!
