Thinking of spending lots of money to upgrade your TV to HD? According to an article in the New Scientist, Think Yourself a Better Picture, you only need to think that you are watching in HD to perceive the benefits!
I imagine that applies to lots of other technologies as well. If I’m listening to music, it really doesn’t make any difference whether I’m listening to a lossless .wav file or a lossy .mp3 file. There is a point at which the file compression becomes obvious but my experience suggests that I can be content with .mp3 (or .ogg) and benefit from the drastically smaller file sizes. Likewise, I am not over-excited about Blu-ray DVD technology; plain DVD is more than enough for any film that can capture my attention enough that I’m not left admiring the background rather than being caught up in the story.
