Mac Timer

The cooking technique I use for rice is as follows:

  1. Get a portion of rice, using a small bowl, and rinse it
  2. Put in a saucepan, add twice as much water (ie. two bowls worth), cover and rapidly bring to the boil
  3. Turn the heat down to a bare simmer and leave, covered, for ten minutes
  4. Turn off the heat and leave covered for another ten minutes

By the end of this, all the water is absorbed and the rice is perfectly cooked. However, a vital piece of equipment is a timer; get distracted and the chances are the result will be a sticky mess rather than excellent rice. I don’t have a timer on the oven in our Oxford flat so I did some searching and downloaded an excellent free program called Timer by Apimac.

Not only did this work very well as a timer but it also has other functions like a stopwatch. I think it will be a useful assistant for more than cooking rice: recommended.
