It is all well and good to enthuse an audience about the possibilities offered by social networking when, like members of the local NHS webteam, they are already predisposed towards that kind of thing by having chosen jobs that involve various measures of communication and internet techology.

In my talk, I also wanted to raise ways in which the solutions we had been talking about could have wider benefits for the NHS (or, as I present it again in the context of my blog, any other group of people).

Those possibilities include peer support (knowledge pool and encouragement for specialists), broadening perspectives, meetings that aren’t limited by time and place and improved chances of serendipitous discoveries.

The challenge is to help people discover what is available, pique their interest so they try it and then, later on, guide them so it continues to be a benefit rather than turning into a time-sink!
