In comments on yesterday’s picture, Magnus (of M-Space fame) was asking if all my favourite pictures were going to be of food.

This one isn’t, although it does include a lemon tree. It was one of the pictures I took on a short break in Sevilla, down in South West Spain. One of the joys of that trip, especially in the context of the long cold spring we were experiencing back in the UK, was to walk round streets where we could see citrus fruits growing and to catch their scent wafting on the breeze.

Although this is one picture, it is actually composed of two separate photos. The light was very intense, so I took two pictures, one exposed for the shadow and one exposed for the sunlit portions. Back home, I blended them together: although I didn’t know it at the time, this is along the lines of a genre known as “high dynamic range” photography.

In theory, you are meant to take the pictures using a tripod so that the structures match exactly. If you look at the larger version of this image, you will see that isn’t the case; however, I was pleased with the subtle surreal effect that came from blending the two together.

I have posted this picture before on the blog but didn’t then go into more detail about how it was composited.
