It has been a long time since I last played jazz music in any context other than noodling around at home but I had the opportunity last night, with the keyboard player from the ‘Teeth and a couple of other guys he had hooked up with (trumpet and drums).
I had a blast! I had not done as much “homework” as I had intended but I was pleased to find that (bar one or two glitches) I was able to keep up and keep my place in the music. Even when things got a little unsure, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I managed to hear where we were and get back on track without derailing the whole enterprise.
There is definitely homework I need to do but, for now, I’m basking in the pleasure of having learnt enough to let the music flow.
